Graded’s Class of 1978

Lisa (Sabbagh) Gholmia  lisagholmia@terra.com.br

Dear David, I really enjoyed seeing all you guys on the photos and hearing news about y'all!  As for myself, I went to FGV  where I majored in Business Administration together with Putz, Adriano Tomasoni and Suplicy.  I'm married to Claudio Gholmia, an orthopaedist, and have 2 daughters who study at Graded - Carolina, 16 a junior and Gabriela, 13 a freshman.  For the past 8 years I've been managing a farm - changed it from milk to beef .  Before I worked as a trader for a brazilian metal industry and also at my family's bearing business ( we import and distribute all types).   After seeing  the photos of the 2002 reunion  and imagining how y'all had a great time I'm seriously thinking of attending our 2003 class meeting.   Just to update you, today I went to a feijoada at Richard Semler's (classes of 76, 77 and 78 were invited) and had a great time.  Mark Suplicy, Charlies Krell and Putz, Alfredo Glick, Vivian Orni, Susana Muszcat and Denise Gold  were the 78 class members which were present.  My regards to all! Keep in touch!

It was wonderful to get your email. I'm not in regular contact with any Graded classmates, but have exchanged email with Shannon Weston ('76) and heard yearly from Maggie Clark until a couple of years ago. I think her parents are still in the Seattle area. I usually get a Christmas note from Jill Baker ('79). I stumbled across the Graded Web page a couple years ago and love getting the Alumni Eye. Haven't been back to Brazil since I left in the middle of our Junior year.  Here's a brief rundown of the last -oh, my gosh- 20 some years. Graduated from Principia College in Elsah, IL then married my college sweetheart. Spent three years in the DC area with a non-profit organization and decided that yes, I certainly didn't profit and maybe I should rethink my career interests. Lived in Boston (Concord actually) for five years and worked at the now defunct Monitor Radio/TV. I've been in Lexington, KY for the last nine years doing freelance radio and video production. (Ever heard of The Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour? It's on 190 radio stations world wide.) I'm a horse nut so central Kentucky and I get along pretty well. I ride and compete in combined training, my hobby and passion. Though we haven't lived overseas, my husband, Tom, has traveled all over the world for work including Sydney where we all went in '95 for a three month stint. This summer we spent a month in Russia -not work related. Tom is now with an Internet company -should hook him up with Eric Craig. We have a nine year old son and two year old daughter.  I'd love to hear from classmates. Hey, does anyone know the whereabouts of Alison Taylor? She left after our sophomore year. I'd also love to know what Perry Sekus ('79) is up to.  Thanks David!  Amy Sauers Nickell

Hello all! At last, the Bakers (George and the former Monica Scheideler) respond to these wonderful emails.  We are truly remiss that we can not attend the 2003 reunion, but wish great fun on all of you!!

This past year has been a crazy year for us and we anticipate the madness continuing for a little while longer. We are in the throngs of finishing a new home in Chevy Chase, Maryland (on the border of
Washington, DC for those who can visit) and are sharing our lives with
quite a few "construction guys."

George has grown a mortgage business which is now clicking around the clock due to unprecedented low interest rates. Meanwhile, I work primarily with NGO's and nonprofits (my favorite being the Campaign to Ban Landmines), which are now mostly scrambling to keep payroll and their humanitarian interests alive.

We are lucky enough to have 3 very cool kids; Gracie (10), Cole (9) and Ava (7), who we took to the Amazon and Bahia last August. Fantastico!!  We hope to go back to Brazil, maybe as early as this coming Christmas.

I teach music, and play flute in a Brazilian group, as well as chamber music, and Jazz. I guess this is as close to a reunion as we'll ever get. Congrats on the great page. Grandes beijos, keep me posted, Love Suzy.

Update 9/1/02:  Suzy’s first CD is out!  Check it out and buy it online at http://www.cdbaby.com/suzys

Hi David, I was just checking out your web page for the first time and I think you did a fantastic job. I was smiling the whole time. It is so exciting to see what our old friends are up to.  I stayed in Los Angeles after I finished at USC and got married in 1984. Had a beautiful daughter (14 years old now) named Anna. I've been teaching fourth grade for the past 10 years in Santa Monica for a private school. Got divorced a few years back and I am now engaged to be married to a film music composer.  I usually try to get back to Brazil at least once a year. I miss home quite often especially my family.  Great job and thanks for the memories, Paola

David Shearer     dshearer@aol.com

I married Donna Denson in 1982, two days after graduating from Purdue University and four days before having to report to my first post-college assignment in Corpus Christi, Texas.   We moved in 1983 to Birmingham, Alabama for a not-to-exceed six month assignment and have been here ever since.  Our two sons, Jack and Chris, 18 and 14 respectively, have been teaching me that all of the grief I caused my folks in the 70s will come back to me twofold.  I work for B.L. Harbert International as their Logistics Manager, an international construction company whose primary niche involves construction and renovation of US Embassies throughout the world, amongst other civil construction feats.  My job is to arrange and choreograph door-to-door transportation services for our worldwide equipment fleet, building materials, personal effects and providing these services to third party firms when needed.

Moved to Michigan and attended Michigan State U. for 2 years then transferred to Nursing School in Detroit. Graduated in '82 then got my BSN from Wayne State in  '85. Met my husband Jim in Nursing school and we went to Bangor ME. for anesthesia school. got married in Detroit area in '87. I'm now working as a nurse teaching health education in the school systems. I have 2 girls, Grace 7 and Katie 5. Hope to hear from you and other people.

Scott Shira     shira@frontiernet.net

I went to the University of New Hampshire and got a Civil Engineering degree. I worked construction for a few years in places such as Providence, Rhode Island, Oswego, NY and Augusta Georgia then decided that I wanted to do something different. I went back to school to get my MBA and quite unintentionally wound up in my hometown of Rochester, NY working for Kodak. I'm currently the Finance Director for our Color Film Manufacturing unit at our factory here in Rochester. While in business school I met my wife Fran. We were married in 1989 and have two great kids Stephanie (six) and Griffin  (three) who, of course, run our lives. Working for Kodak I couldn't send you this without a picture so I have included a recent one.  I have to admit I haven't touched a pair of drumsticks in quite a while but my son shows some promise banging on pots and pans so I might have an excuse to get a drum set again soon. After all, I keep hearing rumors of the Larrys reunion tour.  It was great to read about everybody on the web site. Hopefully it will grow with more people sending in updates.  Thanks again, say hi to Stella for me.

José Shu   tssc@terra.com.br

Last sighting of José was by Kirk Meyer, who reports:  Jose runs both a Japanese and Chinese restaurant, considered among the best in São Paulo.

Further snooping (from his daughter, no less):

Hey Dave!  This is José Paulo Shu's daughter, Tiffany, I'm turning 13 years old soon (May 19th). I was surfing the net and found out this site. So, I decided to update you, hehehe. José Paulo Shu is married to Stella Shu (from Singapore) and has four children. Tiffany (13), Stacey (12), Stephanie (8) and Christopher (6).  What I know, is that I found my dad's goalie shirt from Graded and heard that he was the "famous goalie" from Graded and that he played futebol de salão with you.  His e-mail is tssc@terra.com.br and will be emailing you shortly. He lives in São paulo, SP.  He still doesn't know abt this site and about this e-mail.

In the meantime, here is a pic for the website - I recently went on a business trip to Sydney, and rented a board. Luckily the surf was only 3-4 feet high and I managed ok....take care, Doug.

8/27/02 from Doug Snadecki:  Hi Dave, I just spent from 5-6 am this morning surfing your new site – it looks great thanks for pulling it together!!  Here is a new pic to replace the surfer boy shot that is on the site (no chance I’m gonna delete that one, Doug…), of course it's a family picture - Nancy, Drew(10), Sara (6), Haley (14) and me This one was in Martha's Vinyard about 1 year ago or so....we have been living in Marblehead, Mass, for 12 years...it's just about 30 minutes from Boston.  A few years ago I was working with an international company, and got to travel to SP and RJ a lot - it was great to catch up with Charlie, Adriano, Alfredo, Kirk, and Marco...Se gente de Graded '78 passa por Boston, me da uma ligada no celular  - 781 589-3668 - abracos, Doug.

I love the way Mark Suplicy described me as the "demanding Headmistress" of St. Paul's School! I can just imagine what image of me comes to mind...I carry on being my bouncy old self despite being the Headmistress!  I've been working at St. Paul's for the past ten years and I thoroughly enjoy it. The School has changed a lot for the better since Luca's, Mark's and my days...  I am the proud mother of three gorgeous children. My son is called Jan and he is 18 and I have two daughters, Karoline, who is 16 and Martina who is 12. I pray every day for them not to be as wild as I was at their age...  I saw Marco Bird ( he was my boyfriend at Graded) at the beach in Maresias and he looks exactly the same! He continues to be a typical surfista carioca...  I hope that you are all OK and that life is treating you well..Now that you have my e-mail address, do keep in touch!  A beijão to all of you......me escrevam!  Love, Kirsti

On May 9th, Marco wrote:  David, Great initiative! Just got the class of `78 home page URL from Doug. Why unofficial? I would like to propose it becoming official - will anyone second me? As far as our class mates I did not see Adriano Tomasoni´s or Alfredo Glik´s name on the e-mail list, which is just as well for they have become such sorry looking creatures. I think it would be best for all to keep their past memories of those two. As for myself this year, on June 18th, I will be commemorating my 12th wedding anniversary to Adriana, a psychiatrist, mother to my sons Pedro (5) & João (4). Both of them are enrolled at St. Paul´s School after a grinding entrance exam by the demanding Headmistress (that is the official title) of our former colleague & Marco Bird´s ex-girlfriend Kirsti Soisallo.  Um Abraço,  mark

In a May 2003 sent to Mark Wilson:  Big Surprise! Long time no see, Mark!!  Did Elsie passed my e-mail address to you?  I just saw her a couple of weeks ago in SF.  We went to Alcatraz together. She hasn't changed a bit!  It's amazing. I think she is the only Graded graduate whom I get in touch with.

I wish I could make the reunion, but I think we are going to NY that time. But if we change and we go to Florida, I may hop in to the reunion.

I just moved from Japan to Silicon Valley last May.  I am a housewife and a mother of two children who knew only Japanese culture (actually, I had enough of Japan!) .  After graduating the University in Japan, I went to NYU Graduate School of Business.  I was going to go for my career, but after getting married and having babies, I just found that you don't need an MBA to change diapers!  I always wanted to live abroad, and finally I could get to come to the US.

How is your mom?  I still remember her English class.  She was an energetic teacher and I liked her.  Please send my regards to her.
